Beppe Pezzini
I am a philologist by training, in the broad sense of the word, but my main interests and publications are in Roman comedy, that is the plays of Plautus and Terence, hugely influential for centuries to come. Roman comedies were originally performed in the late 3rd/early 2nd century BC, when Rome was rising as a power in the Mediterranean, and theatre and literature were potent instruments of culture politics.
My main current project is an edition of and commentary on Terence’s Heauton Timorumenos, which I am preparing for the Cambridge ‘Orange Series’. This is a most brilliant and influential play, written by one of the most central Latin authors, who has been largely neglected over the last two centuries. Besides filling a gap as old as Donatus, the commentary aims to develop a new interpretation of this author, focusing on Terence’s key role in the integration of Greek culture and the creation of a literature for the rising power of Rome.
